BRICK PLAY

This series of brick towers was created 2024 in the Filipino province Bataan as a playful interaction with the spatial context of a local bamboo garden in search for places of rest and deceleration.

Multiple spots within thin the arrangement of scattered rocks and high rising bamboo were determined as potential sites for the later placement of more permanent sculptures or other structures. At the same time this approach offered first touching points with the techniques and requirement of bricklaying.

Building with adobe bricks is one of humanity's oldest construction techniques. The rhythm of the masonry is defined by the proportions of the bricks. As a continuation of my engagement with local materials, I found it logical to dry these materials into brick forms. This process allows for the easy production of larger quantities of basic building blocks, which can then be used to sketch sculptures and spatial arrangements, continually reforming into new shapes.

Using this approach, I explored the spatial structure of the bamboo arrangements. In a performative act, pathways were laid out and resting places outlined. Additionally, forms were introduced into the space through towers and walls, aiming to focus the senses on the surrounding context.

Some of the earth bricks ended up breaking, due to the structures heavy weight and uneven distribution of force. This showed the value of adobe over the unrefined mud that was used for the intital test. Also, the preparation of a plain and leveled foundation turned out to be crucial for the stability of the entire structure. The tactile quality of the adobe bricks added a sensory dimension to the installations. Their earthy texture contrasts with the natural surroundings of the bamboo garden, creating a dialogue between the constructed and the organic.

The form experiments presented here are intended as sketches. They mark the starting point of a series of site-specific sculptures that, from a phenomenological perspective, delve into the study of ecological habitats. Each installation aims to foster a deeper connection between the viewer and the environment, encouraging contemplation and awareness of the natural world. By integrating local materials and responding to the specific characteristics of each site, these works invite a continuous re-evaluation of our relationship with nature.
